Hartford, CT - Bill Carew, CEO of Ovation Benefits, a national leader in workforce health improvement and one of the largest independent benefits brokers in the country, will appear on a panel today during a Wellness Forum hosted by Congressman John Larson (D-CT). The forum, titled “Wellness in America: Prevention's Critical Role” is meant to encourage a conversation about healthcare spending and how a focus on preventive care can significantly diminish the burden of healthcare costs. The forum will take place at the Legislative Office Building today from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm.

Carew will be part of an eight-person panel of experts from the Greater Hartford area including Jewell Mullen, M.D., Commissioner, Connecticut Department of Health; H. Robert Silverstein, M.D., Founder, Connecticut Preventive Medicine Center; and Michelle Cloutier M.D., Pediatric Pulmonologist, Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Hartford Childhood Wellness Coalition among others.

According to the release distributed by the Congressman's office, “The Affordable Care Act took major steps to promote prevention and wellness and expand preventive care options to senior citizens, pregnant women, children and adults, but there is still much that can be done. A recent report estimated that of the $700 billion in wasteful healthcare spending throughout the United States every year, up to $50 billion of that is attributed to preventable conditions and avoidable care.” The topic is a timely one, given that Ovation Benefits has launched a Workforce Health initiative designed to lower employer healthcare costs by guiding the employees that are at risk for chronic disease to a place of better health.

“This issue of chronic disease in the workplace and the staggering health care costs associated with treating those diseases is where we know we can have a substantial impact for our clients,” said Carew today. “Approximately thirty percent of every workforce is at risk for cardiovascular disease or diabetes, of which eighty percent are preventable and reversible. If we can work with those employees to get them to goal, we can save their employers huge costs and save lives in the process.”

Today's forum will be open to the public. For more information you can call Congressman Larson's office at 960-278-888.
